This Daily Habit Will Prime Your Brain to Be Its Best

The most important thing that we can put on in the morning is not our clothes, not our makeup, it’s our attitude or our mindset. How we choose to start our days sets us up for success.

In 2003, I attended a workshop. I like to go into workshops and to listen to speakers with the thought that if I can just get one idea from this, then it was worth my time and a success. I’m listening to this speaker and I don’t remember anything else that he said but he talked about the importance of when you get out of bed in the morning. The importance of not only what you say and what you think, but also how you move your body. The way that he suggested that you wake up in the morning is with an arm pump, to say “go get ’em”. He talked about the importance of not only the mental move in the morning, but also the physical move to really create this momentum.

It was so impactful for me, and for many years I started my day that way, to really help energize me and get me ready for the day. And trust me, it works, because you’re signalling to your body that this is going to be a great day.

I will not open my eyes in the morning or let my feet touch the floor before I generate a state of gratitude.

How many times has that alarm gone off? You’re asking, what day is it? What do I have to do today? I don’t want to get out of bed.

Notice that we have habits of how we wake up, the thoughts we usually think first thing.

We can wake up with dark thoughts, regret, dread, anxiety, which sets the tone for your entire day. The daily habit to prime your brain for success is starting your day with a powerful thought.

Another powerful way to prime your brain for success is starting with gratitude.

Years later I met another mentor, she said this is how she starts her day: “I will not open my eyes in the morning or let my feet touch the floor before I generate a state of gratitude.”

Priming your brain and starting your day off with gratitude or “let’s do this day” excitement will train your brain to start asking, what can I do to create the best day ever? What do I have to be grateful for in my life?
