Our nervous systems are taking on so much right now.
Some of it is conscious and we’re very aware of it. For example, if you’re experiencing a job loss, or you’re not sure what’s going to happen in your business, or maybe your kids are at home and you’re trying to manage not only their schedules but also your own schedule. There’s a lot that we’ve been taking on. Consciously, we’re aware of the impact on our nervous system.
We’re also taking on a lot subconsciously. Even if you think you’re doing really good, handling all the pressures of what’s going on around you, subconsciously there is what we call this “thoughtless fear” around us right now, both with the pandemic, what’s happening with the protests, and everything going on in the world. It’s got a certain energetic feel to it that we are all taking on, and if we’re not consciously taking control of that and managing that, it can absolutely impact us in many different ways.
So you may be feeling tired, you might feel more irritable and short with the people around you, maybe you’re not sleeping well or you’re wanting to sleep all the time. Pay attention to your own body and how it’s speaking to you right now. Maybe you are experiencing more aches and pains, or maybe you’re having troubles getting motivated. Or maybe it’s the opposite, and you’re just “go go go” and not taking the time to slow down and to relax and to breathe.
All of that is taking a toll on our bodies right now and impacting us. I wanted to give you one very specific thing that you can do to help minimize that impact and really take conscious control and repattern that, so that you can feel better both at a conscious and a subconscious level.
And that one tool is our breath.
When we breathe in a very specific way, we move from the sympathetic nervous system, which is the fight, flight, freeze energy to our parasympathetic nervous system which is the rest, relax, and digest energy. When we’re in that rest, relax, digest, that’s where we have more access to our creative mind. We can think more clearly, we take different action.
So how to move from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic? The easiest way to do that is through our breath. And when we breathe in a very specific way, it helps to adjust that nervous system.
So here’s how to breathe for this purpose, and I encourage you to do this multiple times a day, even if you’re feeling like nothing’s bothering you, because it’ll help you at a subconscious level. So what we do here is we breathe in through our nose, and we breathe out through our mouth, as if you’re exhaling through a straw. And just by doing that three times in a row, you’ll start to notice your body relax, and as your body relaxes, your mind relaxes.
This helps to adjust our cortisol levels, and really remove that stress from our body, so it doesn’t have long lasting impact. So whether you’re conscious of it right now or not, there’s definitely a heightened energy around us, and we want to really manage it so that it doesn’t have a negative impact on our bodies, our minds, or our spirits.
So your prescription today is to breathe using this method multiple times, and just notice the difference that starts to make for you.
Here is to you living a life you love,
